Acer minitower won't reboot but runs

Hello,
The power button does not work (hold 10 sec). Pulling the plug and leaving off for several minutes, then plug it in leads to disk activity and but not boot sequence and access to BIOS

Is there a way to reset

Any beeping from the PC ? (google beep codes) Looking for 'no video' beep code or something similar if you are getting disk to spin up.

Swap monitors to make sure its the PC not the monitor?

Standard debugging is to pull parts until the PC beeps to complain that the parts are missing. Start by removing all USB attached devices. Then pull PCI cards if any. Then pull memory. There is a 'read this before you post no boot' sticky in the systems forum that can help.

By searching online I did find the answer - remove and replace the CMOS battery. I could then restore the defaults and I could then turn off and on the computer.

The puter still reboots itself. Before doing so the CPU fan goes fast so I replaced the thermal compound on the CPU cooler. The reboots still occur but at a more predictable time.

When starting XP it goes well until the desktop should appear.

I pulled the HD and put in another machine and ran tests and it is okay.

It reboots on every bootable disk I have XP, Hirens, Kapinski,

Could it have anything to do with video?
