I don't get 3D

I tried looking things up for this, but I confused myself even more, wondering if anyone can set me right.
1. If 3D TV's already come with glasses, why do you need the Nvidia ones?
2. Do you need an active/passive 3D TV, or just something capable of 120Hz?
3. What games are supported? I've seen the list, but also seen videos of people using it on games that are supposedly not supported.
4. Supposedly it cuts FPS in half and only supports 720p?
