Anyone know of a way to extract data from / tear apart a damaged RAW
file (Pentax PEF)? My card reader apparently failed me this weekend.
So I need / want to bet the data out.
Is the content & structure of a PEF file published?

You might see if DCRAW will read it. Free command line converter.

First, I would think a recovery of the files on the card would be
warranted. You might try Photo Rescue or PC Inspector File Recovery or a
similar program. I wouldn't write anything to the card in the meantime.

Too late for this to help, but I encountered a problem last month where
a card reader could only handle 256MB or so of data. It extracted the
first 256MB worth or files just fine, and indeed wrote out all 1 GB of
files out with correct files names and sizes, but the contents were
garbage after the first 256BM. I had no idea why my files were messed
up was until asking on dpreview and someone reported having that same
problem. I guess a lot of older card readers are not designed to handle
large cards. Luckily, I had caught this before erasing the card, so I
didn't lose anything, and got the data off using a different card
reader. Meaning I didn't try poking around to see if the files could be
repaired. Good luck!
