HD 7970 upgrade - No video output

Hello everyone,

About a week ago I ordered a Gigabyte AMD Radeon HD 7970 3GB. I plugged it into the PCI-E x16 slot and put in the power connectors, but the monitor did not wake when I turned the computer on.

The fans on the card were spinning and the PC seemed to recognize that a card was in the slot as it didn't fire up the onboard graphics (as it does when there is no card in the slot, I checked) but no matter what I did I could get no signal from it. I have reseated it a dozen or more times.
I have rehoused my mobo and made sure that the PCI-E connector sits flush in the socket. I have checked my BIOS settings and made sure it is the latest revision (which it was, since I had updated it earlier this year when I put in my i5 3570k).

I have been to my wit's end and back again. I come now to you, asking any help you can offer me. Trust that it will be well appreciated. I have no idea what is wrong, anything I haven't thought of would be splendid to hear.

My system:

Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1
CPU: Intel Core i5 3570K @ 3.40GHz
RAM: 8.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 665MHz (9-9-9-24)
Motherboard: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. H61M-D2-B3 (Socket 1155) BIOS rev. F10
PSU: Corsair GS600 (600W)
Previous GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 6770

Thanks for your time.
