After building over 5 Athlon systems, and rebuilding them atleast 15 other times, I killed my first Athlon CPU today. I was installing Windows, heard a pop, computer crashed, started smelling funny. The new Thermaltake Silent Boost HSF I bought had come off, which was surprising considering I am using a desktop case. I just didn't clamp down one edge far enough, so it popped free. The motherboard is okay, as I tested another Athlon in it and it worked just fine.

Oh well. I guess that's just an excuse to upgrade the old Tbird 1400 to a Barton 2500+. I'm just glad the motherboard didn't fry because of it.

That sucks. Could have been worse though. I have an old Tbird1000 if you want to buy it cheap, although I would go the 2500+ route myself if I were you.

Just remember, if you dump the body in the river be sure to weigh it down with something so it doesn't float back up to the top.

Congratulations. Or something.

Nah, the 2500+ is only $80 shipped, so it's nothing to cry about. But, I do have an extra motherboard now, and my brothers dual PIII600 is a loud POS. How much would you sell the 1000 for?

Congrats.

I've killed and revived one CPU in my life. P3 1GHZ broke 2 pins off around the edge. I forgot about it for a while and then decided that it couldn't hurt to try soldering the pins back on. I did that and it still runs like a beauty. A 1GHz processor is sure nice for a secondary box for Linux!!

And always remember, you probably aren't having enough fun unless you are breaking things from time to time :)

I really hadn't thought about it. I'm not using it though. I was going to just give it to my parents and then make a spare rig with their duron 800.
