After building over 5 Athlon systems, and rebuilding them atleast 15 other times, I killed my first Athlon CPU today. I was installing Windows, heard a pop, computer crashed, started smelling funny. The new Thermaltake Silent Boost HSF I bought had come off, which was surprising considering I am using a desktop case. I just didn't clamp down one edge far enough, so it popped free. The motherboard is okay, as I tested another Athlon in it and it worked just fine.
Oh well. I guess that's just an excuse to upgrade the old Tbird 1400 to a Barton 2500+. I'm just glad the motherboard didn't fry because of it.

That sucks. Could have been worse though. I have an old Tbird1000 if you want to buy it cheap, although I would go the 2500+ route myself if I were you.

Nah, the 2500+ is only $80 shipped, so it's nothing to cry about. But, I do have an extra motherboard now, and my brothers dual PIII600 is a loud POS. How much would you sell the 1000 for?

I've killed and revived one CPU in my life. P3 1GHZ broke 2 pins off around the edge. I forgot about it for a while and then decided that it couldn't hurt to try soldering the pins back on. I did that and it still runs like a beauty. A 1GHz processor is sure nice for a secondary box for Linux!!
And always remember, you probably aren't having enough fun unless you are breaking things from time to time
