Hello all. Long time lurker but felt compelled to post. 5 months ago I had an eVGA GTX260 I bought off ebay. It was a great card until one day while viewing a website that the screen locked up. Rebooted and there were terrible artifacts all over the screen, weird corrupted characters.
So I on some recommendations I bought a Sapphire HD6850 new from Newegg. Was my first new video card in many years. Worked great until last week. While playing Skyrim, I decided to make myself some dinner, so I left Skyrim running by entering the menu.
Came back after 15 minutes and and saw my monitor was white with narrow vertical bars running across the entire screen. So I rebooted, but my monitor would not detect a signal at all. I switched cables using the 2nd DVI port and it briefly worked but rebooting again it would not detect a signal.
I then took a cheap HDTV and used the HDMI cable. Detected signal just fine. So I ran Skyrim again. Sure enough after a few minutes the white screen with gray vertical bars across happened again. Rebooted back into W7 and while on a webpage it happened again. I suspect it had something to do with a flash ad. Same thing that happened to my GTX260.
Right now I've got my old trusty 8800GT which has been rock solid for years as backup.
So my question is does this sound like the card just isn't getting enough power or something? I've read that the 6850 uses little power compared to the 260, one of the reasons I bought it.
I dont overclock at all. The case is well ventilated and cool. Temps for the 6850 were 37c idle. I got an RMA confirmation today so I will be sending off the card to Sapphire to get it fixed/replaced. However Im also about to build a new system anyway as mine is showing its age. I'm planning on getting the Seasonic 620w PSU but would like to know if my issues are PSU related. If not perhaps I could keep my 380w for now and save $100.
