Hey guys! I have a system like this: MB Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, CPU Opteron 180 (2.4 Ghz x2), RAM 3 GB, PSU 550 W. I actually have a GPU Geforce 6600GT. I would like to make a small upgrade of this video card spending less than 100 euros. My question is whether the gpu's in this field work well with my processor avoiding bottle-necking.

I have individualized some cards with 1GB of ram (GTS 250, GTS 450, GTX 460, Radeon 4870, Radeon 5770, Radeon 6670) but i am not really sure which one to choose. Being an old system, i don't want to spend a lot of time but just bring it to an acceptable level.

I wait for suggestions and advises!!!

Thank you!

The 7750 is what I recommend. Its the fastest card you can get in that range that won't be too bottle necked by your cpu. I don't know what games you are playing, but that is a dinosaur of a platform and I would recommend upgrading your cpu, motherboard and memory too if you really want to play today's games.

The Radeon 7770 is a very good bang for the bucks right now and it should sell for less than 100 euros (you could also check for previous generation 6850 which offers similar performance but has a higher memory bandwidth). Just make sure your power supply has at least 1 x 6-pin PCI-E power connector for the 7770 (I think the 6850 doesn't require any). You could also look at the GTX-460 which also offers similar performance, but it requires 2 x 6-pin connectors.

my only "fear" is an eventual bottlenecking of the system, whether i consider my cpu good, even if old. is there any way to know if the system will be blocked by such a gpu?

in my mb specifications i read in the section "expansion slots":
2 x PCIe x16 *SLI mode : x8 , x8 *Default(Single VGA) mode : x16, x1
2 x PCIe x1
3 x PCI

The card 7770 is a PCI-express 3.0. Would it be suitable for my slots?

Any suggestion between these 2 GPUs to combine without bottlenecking with an Opteron 180 (2.4GHz x2) socket 939?

Thank you!

i am sattisfied even with low resolutions, its not a major problem for me (1280*1024 for example). Do you have any alternatives to suggest me instead of HD7770?
thank you guys

You already asked that same question earlier today:

Maybe the card would be just a tad bit bottlenecked but as I already explained there's no exact science for this. If you're so afraid of bottleneck just get a 7750 or a lesser card then. But there's no way to tell for sure if it will be bottlenecked by 5, 10, or 25%, or if on the contrary there is still some headroom left for a better card, there's no chart for this on the web with exact numbers, not to mention it could vary from one game to another, some games are more CPU dependent, some others rely more on the GPU and some rely heavily on both, etc...

Is 1280 x 1024 the resolution of your monitor or you just lower it for gaming? It's always best to play in your native resolution. But if 1280 x 1024 is the maximum resolution of your monitor then a 7750 would get the job done I guess.
