Hey guys! I have a system like this: MB Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe, CPU Opteron 180 (2.4 Ghz x2), RAM 3 GB, PSU 550 W. I actually have a GPU Geforce 6600GT. I would like to make a small upgrade of this video card spending less than 100 euros. My question is whether the gpu's in this field work well with my processor avoiding bottle-necking.

I have individualized some cards with 1GB of ram (GTS 250, GTS 450, GTX 460, Radeon 4870, Radeon 5770, Radeon 6670) but i am not really sure which one to choose. Being an old system, i don't want to spend a lot of time but just bring it to an acceptable level.

I wait for suggestions and advises!!!

Thank you!

i suggest 650 gtx, i have one with my old system and works fine if u dont whant to upgrade cpu and etc, if u are from gr. dont buy them from plaisio, google skroutz and type the card for less money

The 7750 is what I recommend. Its the fastest card you can get in that range that won't be too bottle necked by your cpu. I don't know what games you are playing, but that is a dinosaur of a platform and I would recommend upgrading your cpu, motherboard and memory too if you really want to play today's games.

another guy suggested the gtx 650. what would you think?

The Radeon 7770 is a very good bang for the bucks right now and it should sell for less than 100 euros (you could also check for previous generation 6850 which offers similar performance but has a higher memory bandwidth). Just make sure your power supply has at least 1 x 6-pin PCI-E power connector for the 7770 (I think the 6850 doesn't require any). You could also look at the GTX-460 which also offers similar performance, but it requires 2 x 6-pin connectors.

my only "fear" is an eventual bottlenecking of the system, whether i consider my cpu good, even if old. is there any way to know if the system will be blocked by such a gpu?

@tasospao: Not really, or it's very difficult to say. This is why I wouldn't recommend anything above a 7770.
November 21, 2012 2:15:36 PM

in my mb specifications i read in the section "expansion slots":
2 x PCIe x16 *SLI mode : x8 , x8 *Default(Single VGA) mode : x16, x1
2 x PCIe x1
3 x PCI

The card 7770 is a PCI-express 3.0. Would it be suitable for my slots?

Yes don't worry PCI-Express 3.0 is backward compatible so the card should work in a 1.0 slot.

what do you mean by "old" system?

do you think there will be bottleneck problems?
November 21, 2012 3:59:38 PM

Any suggestion between these 2 GPUs to combine without bottlenecking with an Opteron 180 (2.4GHz x2) socket 939?

Thank you!

most likely will be the other way around.

I think he means that the opteron 180 will bottleneck the 7770.

The Opteron 180 will bottleneck the HD7770. That being said, they will certainly work together. What resolution will you be gaming at?

i am sattisfied even with low resolutions, its not a major problem for me (1280*1024 for example). Do you have any alternatives to suggest me instead of HD7770?
thank you guys

What's your budget?
November 21, 2012 8:40:39 PM

i don't think i should spend for an old system more than 100 euros!

You already asked that same question earlier today:

http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/378680-33-which-combi...

Maybe the card would be just a tad bit bottlenecked but as I already explained there's no exact science for this. If you're so afraid of bottleneck just get a 7750 or a lesser card then. But there's no way to tell for sure if it will be bottlenecked by 5, 10, or 25%, or if on the contrary there is still some headroom left for a better card, there's no chart for this on the web with exact numbers, not to mention it could vary from one game to another, some games are more CPU dependent, some others rely more on the GPU and some rely heavily on both, etc...

Is 1280 x 1024 the resolution of your monitor or you just lower it for gaming? It's always best to play in your native resolution. But if 1280 x 1024 is the maximum resolution of your monitor then a 7750 would get the job done I guess.

Gaming at 1280x1024 should be okay for the Opty with either a 7770 or a 7750.

Hi guys! I have a dated system (Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe, Opteron 180 2.4Ghz x 2, 3 Gb DDR, NVidia 6600gt). Which GPU could i combine (avoiding bottlenecking), with a total cost under 100 euros, to update my system?

Thank you!

dot waste your time use what you have.

your system will severely hold any modern graphics performance..

well, opteron 180 is an old cpu, on par with athlon x2 4800+ and struggle hard againts E6300 which is bottom end of first core2duo generation..

But i heard this opteron is easily overclockable, you can gain noticeable performance at 3Ghz..

Okay, HD 7750 maybe the strongest card for your system..

yes, it'll be slightly bottlenecked, but even old 9800GT will be.. :)
November 24, 2012 4:46:30 PM

why do you say so?
November 24, 2012 4:47:53 PM

i had individualized the 7750. Do you think its better the same card with 1 or 2gb of ram?

  • OK so the guy created like 5 different threads asking the same question all over again? Wow.

tasospao: Just get a 7750 and stop worrying about bottlenecks. Your CPU is likely to bottleneck any cards anyways. Or if you're so afraid of bottleneck just get a GT 630 or a 7350 but please stop creating new threads.
