512 Seen as 256 - unless another chip is installed

I a 512MB SDRAM (PC133) chip. If I install it by itself, it is seen as 256MB of ram. If I install it with a 256 meg chip, the system sees all of the RAM!!!! - What gives on this??? - Have tried 2 different motherboards, different slots etc. The CPUs are PIII Slot 1s.

i think you 512Mo ram is faulty because you test it in 2 diff mb.
i think it's a cheaper ram & you have to ask an exchange from your reseller or to ask him to change it with a better quality one.


if you know you don't know, the way could be more easy.
