I would recommend a Lite-on CD writer - they're cheap and quite reliable. Creative's site is telling you to get a Creative drive since it's their product...

Lite on drives are quite capable and cheap. My experience is the drive burns at 24x with no problems from my older (slow) HD or my 4x (or so) Toshiba DVD drive (reading cds).

Note: that is ~4x DVD, it reads cds at about 32x (tested).

I've actually heard that the Creative CD burners are of very low quality/high RMA. Lite-on and LG would probably be a better choice (and Plextor and Yamaha would be the best choice).

You don't NEED to pair up a Creative CD-ROM drive with a Creative burner. That's just Creative's marketing (note that they say SUGGEST instead of HAVE TO).

i think i'm going to snag one of those lite-on ones. looking at some reviews i've found it's a exceptional performer, specially for the price. half of what it would cost for a plextor. i currently have a crw2200ez yamaha and i'm sick of it. burning is a 50-50 chance, and forget about reading anything with it. anytime i put a cd in it just spins up and down. yamaha has already "supposedly" repaired it once because of this problem. and i've tried probably about 8 different brands of media, i have never gotten this thing to actually burn at 20x. usually 16x, but the past 4 times i've burnt something it won't burn past 12x. i bought it retail box and the first time the problems occured was a month, maybe a tad over a month after buying it. i feel yamaha should've replaced it. and from their "repair" list that was sent back to me with the drive had not one thing listed on there, so it makes me question whether they even bothered messing with it. i will not purchase another yamaha again.

[insert philosophical statement here]

I just got my Lite-On 24x10x40 CDRW from Newegg for $82, and it's been working great. I built a computer for a friend, which has this same CD writer, and he's had no problems as well. 3 1/2 minute full burns for half the cost of a Plextor or TDK is awesome! I've had no coasters yet....
