My friend approached me with a burnt copy of Windows XP Profressional Edition that he said he would never use. He told me that he got it free from his company and he doesn't want to bother upgrading. I am on Windows 2000 Professional and I'm wondering if I should upgrade? I guess a graphic enhancement would be nice, but would I keep the same numbers in performance? I'm also a serious gamer, so this worries me. Can I get better looks with the same performance? Incase you need my system specs for any strange reason -

Windows 2000 Professional
AMD XP1800
256MB PC133 Ram
Geforce 3 Ti 200
IBM 20 gig 7200 rpm
SB Live

Thanks

Go with XP. XP was designed for multimedia. If there is any question about compatability look at:

Just try it and see for yourself. I dont really see anything that is "better than Win2k" at this point, plus be prepared for pre-XP software issues, coz not all Win2k software runz smooozz on XP.

..this is very useful and helpful place for information...

Don't even bother, I had Windows 2000 Professional on my computer and you can't upgrade it. You can only add it on, so you have two operating system, so you can either bootup 2K or XP. I tried installing XP so it would delete 2K, and it ended up screwing up my lovely 40GB harddrive. Poor me.

It can be upgraded, provided you have XP Pro Upgrade. Otherwise, you will have to wipe Win 2K or re-partition the hard drive.

Alright, I just have to say something. I'm not sure you checked your sources right about not being able to upgrade it. I'm not bagging on you, but don't blame Windows XP for messing up your hard drive. Trying to install Windows and the occurrence of your hard drive blowing up is just a bad coincedence, so don't go advertising that Windows XP sucks, when a whole lot of people have had fairly good experiences with it (especially me).

Dude, it was a bad day. But, that guy has been baggin on it ever since he posted "Windows XP blew up my hard drive". Don't make statements that you haven't verified to be true. Shoot...

No grudges...as long as he doesn't keep doing it.
