Display driver stop responding screen turns black constantly

All of a sudden my screen was black. my background , wallpaper are gone.I can change it to a different but I can't get my old background back. When I try to reset them , it goes black. I didn't do anything to it that I can think of.

Is this a legit copy of Windows 7, this usually happens with pirated software.

It better not be pirated as I just bought a new computer at Staples. I fixed the problem by restoring the system back to before the problem started. I would still like to know why the screen turned black as I hadn't touched the presonalize screen at all.

If you have automatic updates turned on, it may have updated your video driver which in turn may have caused the problem.
