Upgrade than build

Hello everybody at tom's hardware,

I plan on buying a custom computer but first I am just going to upgrade my RAM. MY brother who "claims" to know a lot about computers, it turns out he doesn't know as much as I thought so here are my questions that I have been getting different answers from.

1. What all will I need to upgrade my RAM? My brother says I will need to upgrade the power supply, mother board and CPU just to upgraded my RAM.

2.If I am building a computer can I use different parts from different brands? Like an ASUS mother board and a Intel CPU or do they all need to be the same brand?

1. We need to know what your components are. You could just have to buy the ram or you might have to buy a motherboard, cpu and ram.
2. Yes, you can mix brands that's the best way to build a pc.
