Hey, I recently bought a 7950 and realized that my CPU isn't nearly as strong as it needs to be(AMD Phenom 9750 Quad 2.4 ghz), so I was wondering which CPU would be good to upgrade to for a minimal price. I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168.... In addition, I only have a 500W power supply. Thanks.

It's AM2+ so I think I'm going to have to upgrade the mobo

Not a bad budget combo ==> Mobo = CPU :)

I have an Antec 500W PSU and 8 gigs of RAM. Will the combo you listed bottleneck my 7950?

At 1080p no.

But you need DDR3 ram. 4gb is plenty

Is 8GB DDR2 good enough?

Depends on what part.

8 GB=good
DDR2=bad

If you want to save your old memory, sell it on ebay, then buy 8 gb of ddr3 it is only $30 and faster.

250, I was thinking of getting a MSI 760GM-P34(FX) Motherboard, 8 gb of Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3 Ram and a AMD FX-6300 Vishera 3.5GHz processor. Will this rig run on a 500W PSU or bottleneck my 7950?

This comes out to like 222$

You can go for budget intel i3 based system which will be good for 7950. That fx-6300 is not that good. Windows 8 will run it as 3-core. Not so efficient. A i3 cpu will give you more frame than fx-6300.

It wont be a bottleneck. 6300 Is a new processor but why u sticking with AMD specially with that CPU.

CPU

AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor $89.99
Motherboard

ASRock 970 EXTREME4 ATX AM3+ Motherboard $99.99
Memory

G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory $24.99

Total: $214.97

This is a better build and Wattage is here

125W Cpu
16W Ram
15W Hdd
25W Dvd
208W Gpu

Memory
G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory $24.99

Wattage

55W Cpu

Safer and better with this build.

IMO u should get this. And there wont be any bottleneck

Yeah, its a better option. Old Phenom are good than new AMD cpu.

So, i3 or the Phenom?
m

November 25, 2012 8:19:08 PM

Oh also, the Phenom is compatible with my AM2 motherboard, will getting the new motherboard affect my frame rate in games a considerable amount or is it skippable?
EDIT: the current mobo is also a PCI 2.0 and my 7950 is 3.0 compatible, if this affects the answer at all.
2nd EDIT: Is there a large difference between the ASRock and cheaper mobos?

The second answer.

The first answer

As i said before get the I3. Its better than P4 and you have Upgrade path. Lets say you get some money and u buy the I5. Way better than any amd CPU.

My vote I3 !!

Yes u should .Its AM2 and P4 Its AM3.

But i still recommend going with I3.

I see you are in love with AMD but for a better price/performance and less power draw I3 is superior to P4.

Edit : Well there is some difference in cheaper mobos. Thats why they are cheaper.

Asus is the king .Asrock was part of Asus but now its solo and has cheaper mobos.

Gigabyte and Msi are also two good mobo brands.

But i prefer Asus/Asrock as they never failed me unlike Gigabyte.

Well you could change it with an I5-3570K but that would require 330$.

CPU
Intel Core i5 3570k Quad-Core Processor $199.99

Motherboard
ASRock Z77 Extreme4 ATX LGA1155 Motherboard $104.99

Memory
G.Skill Ripjaws Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory $24.99

And that link doesnt work.

Yes for sure . That is Guaranteed !!!

I can get 50 Fps + on Bf3 . And look my CPU is a 20$ Pentium.

currently, even with the new 7950 I'm only getting 30-40, would you attribute this to the CPU, mobo, RAM or all of the above?

Yes . I3 is powerful than your current CPU and RAM does also affect it.

My last PC was Athlon 4200+ OCed to 2.5 Ghz 3 Gb Ddr2 Hd 5450

I was strugling at all the games i wanted to play on good quality. But now i can kill everything .

And so you WILL if u get that I3 build :)

Passmark its no really accurate.

I5/I7 can not be beaten by Fx 8xxx.

So i still reccomend I5 3570K as it is 200 $ same as i5 2400 and cheaper than I5 2500k.

30 $ wouldnt harm i think and they are really worth it. You would keep that I5 for a very very long time

xD

No Problem :)

I'm here to help you !

Edit : Yes it is .

I3 has better core clock and i went with Intel CPU too . And look what i did .

I bought a 20$ cpu on ebay and im saving to get I5 3570 K . Within a moth ill be getting that. But with P4 i cant do such a thing.

Comparing to gaming even low end CPU intels were beating AMD.

So I3 will do great in gaming and there wont be any think for you to worry.

Really easily to 4.5 Ghz.

Hyper 212 Evo will help you to keep that CPU cool.

Well I3 cant be OCed so you dont really need something to cool it. Stock cooler is ok.

I get 50+ on 1280x1024 on everything cranked to max.

And i have a different CPU and GPU

I3>>G620

7950>>560 Ti

So you would definitely recommend the i5? I'm leaning towards that right now. Is it that much better than the i3?
