hiya
just got me an Asus A7V266-E and Athlon XP 1600+
wanna know what kinda ram i can stick innit.

from what i know already from the crucial and kingston configurators, 256/512MB PC2100 DDR CL2.5 is what keeps coming up.

i wanna put 2x256 now, then maybe another 512 in later.

i've read some stuff in this forum about ECC and "registered" and CL2 and whatnot...
i'm in the uk and have not even seen CL2 memory options from any supplier yet.

i also read on this forum about not being able to have > 2 stick without them all being registered, this true?

i will prolly go with crucial PC2100 DDR CL2.5 unbuffered, unless there's a jolly good reason not too :-s

so, question is can i do 2x256 + 1x512 with these puppies?
is ECC worth the extra ££'s? is it necessary?
is registered worth the extra ££'s? why would i need it?

I personally would go with the following:

Home machine: non-ECC, unbuffered.
Server-type machine: ECC, buffered.

As for the combo of 2x256 + 1x512. Not sure about that. Can't you just go with 1x512 now?

thanks brannor.
why 2x256 instead of 1x512? simple. i'm tight - it's slightly cheaper. then when/if prices look better dropping another 512 shouldn't be a problem.

the pc will be a home workstation, mainly used for development and multimedia. some games now and again.

also, is buffered the same as registered?
ie. is ddr ram either registered or unbuffered?

ta again
