Hello everyone, I am new to tom's hardware... so my apologies in advance for any potential 'noobish' questions! lol ^,^;;
I am looking to find out a few bits of information on upgrading a desktop that my parents recently decided on giving to me. (The hdd crashed on them, and thus they do not wish to fix it. Their loss. ) I have ordered a new hdd, and a copy of windows 7 home premium, which should arrive at my apartment within the next week. I have help in regards to getting this desktop up and running, but would like to upgrade it (if all possible..)
Info on what it currently has:
-I am not entirely sure how 'new' the motherboard is, but i do know it's a foxconn m61pmv board.
-I did somewhat of a 'test run' with the old defective hdd attached, and was able to find out that it has an amd athlon 64 X2 2.2 processor (pleas correct me if this info seems wrong), and also has 3 gigs of ram. The user's manual that my parents gave with it, indicates it has onboard video graphics, which looks like a Nvidia Geforce 6100/ nForce 430. (unsure how strong video capabilities are on that.)
Now, my goal with this desktop is to upgrade it into a gaming pc as best as i can, but also on a tight budget (at most around $300-$350 for cpu, video card, ram, maybe power supply?)...
First thing i would like to know, what would be an excellent cpu to put in this machine, would the current one be fine? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... <<<< i have heard that this is an excellent amd processor, but thing is would this one work? Has anyone personally put this into my board?
Second, i know a dedicated graphics card would be ideal over onboard video for gaming purposes, so... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168... <<<would this particular graphics card work/run well with my board? It seems like a real beast, and at a budget price! If this card is guaranteed to run, then i will not hesitate to order.
In relation to video card, i also know that if i wish to install a video card (like one mentioned) that i may need a better power supply. I believe the one that my desktop has only goes up to 250w, and that's all i really know in that field. I can't imagine a 250w power supply being okay.. So, any recommended power supplies that could fit into my desktop?
My apologies in advance for such a long post, but i want to make sure i do not order anything that may/will not work, or even worse kill my system because the board couldn't handle so much power.
Thank you for any advice given!
(also, my apologies if i put this in the wrong forum.)
