I found this Radeon HD 6970 on Tigerdirect for $189. I usually see 6970s go for MUCH more than that. Was this a good choice, or is there something to it that I don't know about?

That's a good deal, was it refurbished? It's an old card so if they still stock it, it wouldn't surprise me if they put it on a clearance sale.

Yeah it has to be a refurbished card or something like that ... you're talking about a ~50% price cut. That or you found one heck of a Black Friday/Cyber Monday deal.

Already got it. I just want to know if the card itself (as advertised) is good.

In theory, yes. If this card is new/in good working condition, you got a great deal.

Yeah that's a good deal, Visiontek isn't my number 1 board partner that I would buy but for the price I would give them a shot.

few weeks ago off of ebay for $160 and since the seller was local i met him @ a mexican restaurant instead of shipping it. the guy is a WoW geek (no overclocking) and even the fan blades are clean!

sent a little PM about the other . . .

At that price you definitely got yourself a darn good deal. A 6970 is still a very capable card and with a heatsink like that you may be able to overclock a little and get more out of it. I got my 6970 to 980MHz, mind you, that was with an Arctic Accelero Xtreme 3 cooler but yeah, any game you want to play, the 6970 will bring you great performance!

Hope you enjoy the card! :D

The way I compare price is by looking at amazon and newegg. If anyone can beat their price by a good marging - it IS a good deal.

I got one of these too. As far as overclocking it goes it seems to be locked in at 870 mhz. It's maxed out at 870 in afterburner. You can attempt to overclock it with saphire trixx, but bumped up just 10 mhz to 880, it was artifacting like crazy. Also, it just has two 6 pin power connections instead of the 8- pin and the 6- pin, so i think it may be a 6950 that was factory flashed to 6970 BIOS and then factory overclocked as much as possible. If anyone has had any luck overclocking one of these let me know.
