Looking to upgrade graphics on older pc

I am looking to upgrade the graphics on a HP Pavilion a6114x Desktop. Information on this PC can be found http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01114300&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=3455704 and http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01077676&tmp_task=prodinfoCategory&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&lc=en&product=3455704#N52 . I don't intend to do any serious gaming, just basic computing and some programming. The reason I am upgrading is because I want to be able to have dual screens with extended desktop, as it makes programming significantly easier. Do you have any recommendations? I am not looking to spend too much... hopefully around $50-$75 for both a video card and a PSU. Everything is still original in the computer, with the exception of the 2GB of ram that I added.

  1. Well Antec Vp-450W is 30$ now so that leaves 20-45 for gpu.

Check this .It is out of stock but keep your eye on it.

If not this will do good http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130656&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-na-_-na-_-na&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

I had a similiar computer with 4200+ CPU oc to 2.5 and i had a 5450.I was doing some basic gaming and CS4. It was really good. If u get that 630 would be just great !
  2. thank you for the info, I will look into these... in the meantime, does anyone else have a suggestion? I was looking into these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130534 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125432 at newegg prior to posting... any thoughts on those?
  3. Well dont go for that old gen card (9800 Gt)

Althought it is good dont go for it.

Hd 5450 would be a better choise
  4. So between the 5450 and the two you sent, which should I go with? Considering the 5450 is $8 after rebate... will it get me what I need?
  5. Loooool 8$ i didnt see it. Go get it asap :D
  6. Believe me or not the 9800 gt mops the floor vs the 5450, the 9800gt 1gb is much better, but it has a really higher power consumption and a higher price.

So would you go with the 9800, the 5450, or the 630?
  8. If you don't need gpu power, the 5450 which has a really lower power consumption and lower price is the best choice.
Also you need a psu with two 6-pin with 450w for the 9800gt and i don't know if you have that.
The 5450 doesn't need that like i said...the 630 gt will be better in terms of performance/same power consumption but it's more expensive
  9. I need to upgrade my PSU anyway, because it is only like 275 watts or something ( I am at work, I don't recall)... I was looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171060 and http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139026 for PSU.
  10. Not CrapMaster as PSU. Only M series are good.

I suggest Antec VP 450W which is 30$ right now.

And 9800Gt is an old gen card. I dont recommend it.

Gt 630 would be a better choice or Hd 5450/6570

  11. If you wanna buy a psu go with the corsair not the coolermaster or this one :

And aim for a 6670 or 630 gt.
  12. Aren't all of these an improvement over my current video card? For what I do, it is just fine for me, so as long as I stay in the same quality as that, I only care about having the dvi/hdmi for extended desktop.
  13. Well you dont need to spend a lot so get that 8$ card.
  14. The 5450 is a decent card and will give you the dual monitor setup you want. I could play battlefield play for free with it on max at 1280x1024. I just upgraded to a 7750.
  15. I guess so, 8$ is dirty cheap and will do with that crappy psu.
  16. I went with the corsair and the 5450... thanks for all the input guys... I paid 75 now, but once my rebates are in, I will have paid <40 bucks!
  17. Nice.

    Good Luck !
