I've just signed up here but I've been looking around for months now. I just built a budget gaming computer and now I need a graphics card. The two I am looking at is the Radeon 7870 and the GTX 660. I was leaning towards the 7870 but I have some concearns. A while back I saw an article here I think it was titled "Does AMD give up image quality for performance?" In the article they showed close up's of different images where the last generation GTX 500's and Radeon 6970's were cmpared to the new 7000 series video cards and it was easy to see that the old GTX 550's and Radeon 6970's had better image quality. Even with graphics set at ultra and anti aliasing on there were jagged edges and blurry tree's. So is this true and if so has it been fixed? Which would be better the 660 or 7870?

More about : radeon 7870 gtx 660

I am always with nvidia, and in your situation i would always get a gtx 660 versus radeon. But, in this comparison I would have to side with Radeon since you get more for the money..

Radeon never really has problems with image quality i dont think.

In the end:
I personally prefer the nvidia, but the radeon is better

eh i dont think that that is the case. But if you want to stick with nvidia, go for it. But i really dont think that should happen. Should it happen, simply take it out and return it with your receipt and buy the nvidia.

Look I just went from 2 x 6950 CF to a 7970 GHz. Everything is ultra sharp! The 7870 is just flat out stronger for the same or less as nvidia.

There was a follow up to that somewhere and it's been addressed. Was a driver issue, I think.

They two are pretty close with the 7870 being a bit slower but also being a bit cheaper.

Here's the fps results for the 7870:

Batman Arkham City 66.2
BF3 50.2
BattleForge 122.8
Civilization 5 65.6
Crysis 40.7
Crysis 2 47.8
Dragon Age II 44.0
Hard Reset 62.0
Metro 2033 23.5
Stalker CoP 71.4
Starcraft 2 127.8
Shogun 2 37.4
Skyrim 70.3
WoW 85.9
Diablo II 145.0
Max Payne 3 57.3
Sniper Elite V2 54.8

Total of 1172.7 fps and with a cost of $240 comes out to $0.20 per frame

And for the 660 Ti

Alan Wake 62.9
Batman Arkham City 71.9
BF3 58.0
BattleForge 104.4
Civilization 4 68.8
Crysis 44.2
Crysis 2 52.6
Dragon Age II 56.3
Hard Reset 74.2
Metro 2033 22.2
Stalker CoP 76.6
Starcraft 2 177.9
Shogun 2 51.6
Skyrim 63.4
WoW 112.5
Diablo II 176.3
Max Payne 3 60.9
Sniper Elite V2 52.7

Total of 1387.4 fps and with a cost of $260 comes out to $0.19 per frame

For comparison the 7950 gets 1348.2 fps at $300 coming out t0 $0.22 per frame and the 670 gets 1475.2 fps at $330 or $0.22 per frame.

And, before its mentioned again .... we know about the techpowerup article which said the 7xxx cards have speed increases ..... but as the comparison was against 2 generations old nVidia drivers, I'm sticking with the most recent "apples and apples" comparisons. Newer nVidia drivers are faster too and I haven't seen any recent head to head "current drivers on both sides" comparisons

As Spent said I was looking at the 660 not the 660 TI but still it gives an idea of what to expect.

LOL yeah before the driver update the 7870 was a hair weaker than the 660 Ti. Now it is ~10% stronger than before and is being compared to a card that is ~15% weaker than the 660 Ti. THE CHOICE IS SO OBVIOUS PEOPLE!

Well 7870 anyday. 660 is weaker than 7870.

Maybe with the TI its ahrder to choose but with this one its really easy.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-graphics-car...

Updated on 20 November 7870 is 1 tier higher than 660.

Also with ne 12.11 beta 8 there have been tons of improvements making 7870 win hell easily.
