Well I am building what I have fondly termed a "classic" computer. The point of the project was to gather together revolutionary/groundbreaking PC components into one system. Here is what I have so far and I would greatly appreciate additions, suggestions, even disagreeing remarks.
AMD Athlon 1Ghz Processor [Slot A]. In my mind, the breaking of the 1Ghz "barrier," especially when accomplished by an underdog, means revolution. This is my pick for the "classic" CPU
SoundBlaster Awe64 Gold. The only soundcard I have ever seen with RCA outputs, this is the single most famous soundcard I could think of.
3DFX Voodoo5 5500 AGP. 3DFX was the king in its day, and the voodoo5 5500, despite poor driver support and the inability to compete in its day, was the last in a long line of quality 3DFX products. It was the last widely available graphics card from the company, to the best of my knowledge, before it collapsed and, in my opinion, it's specifications and aspirations were truly revolutionary -- so revolutionary, in fact, that they spawned a whole new way of thinking about graphics cards. This is my pick for the "classic" graphics card.
Kenwood 72x True.X "Zen" CD-Rom. The only revolutionary or unique CD-ROM drive ever build. This thing is greased lighting, and, in my opinion, the "classic" optical drive.
Ok, that's it. I still need a power supply, RAM, network card, and hard drive before I can finish it out. The motherboard I am using is a Tyan Trinity S2380 -- it won my attention because it is Slot A, made by a great company, and one of the few remaining boards with an ISA slot on it. If you think there is a better candidate that meets those requirements, let me know! I would rather have had one made by Asus, but they didn't make on that had both slot A and ISA to my knowledge.
Anyway, let me know what you think and if you think there is something I overlooked -- the research behind the parts is what is making this project fun for me.
The more you know, the more you know that you know less than you thought you knew when you knew less than you now know
Voodoo 5 sucked balls too. Why not go with a GeForce256 for classic video card? It was the first "GPU" card, first with DDR memory, first time nVidia was on top of all the competition, and let nVidia pretty much get the contract to do the XBox.
What's the point of making an obsolete computer? They aren't like classic cars...

Because a classic car can give you everything a modern car can give you, just with a little flare. A classic computer has no flare, and can't do what a modern computer can do. It's just an old computer...
I gave you useful input, suggesting a GeForce 256 would be more "classic" than a Voodoo 5.

I don't think the 5500 is a good choice. Either the Geforce256 or a Voodoo3 3000. Even a pci Voodoo2 12MB that you could run in parallel would be a better choice.
I think its a nice project for someone who likes computers...You should definately put together some sort of pictorial guide to the parts whith as much information as you can gather...along with press releases and such...Make it into a kind of museum piece....anyway have fun...
If an argument can't be settled in one or two paragraphs, perhaps you're anal and should just let it go...
