system will not finish boot up with cd-dvd combo

i have a compaq presario 5461(no pity please)it has a 500mhz processor, 192sdram, 10gb harddrive, 1 floppy, a cd r/rw and an iomega zip drive(external-parellel). now for the problem i just purchased and installed a toshiba dvd, i made the cd the master and the dvd the slave, used the cd-rom cable supplied by compaq making connections starting from the motherboard as follows dvd slave and finally the cd master on the end of the ribbon cable. when i turn the computer on it starts to boot but stalls out before it reaches the desktop, does any body have an idea what is going on?

More about system finish boot combo
  1. Try if setting the jumpers of drives to 'Cable Select' fixes the problem.
Compaq sometimes have very weird IDE configurations: I also have an old Compaq and I must set the drive to cablke select otherwise Windows wont boot.

My case has so many fans that it hovers above the ground  .
  2. hey graylensman2, i have the same pc as you and tried to run a dvd-rom as a slave and it wouldn't boot into windows, and no video. did the advice from svol work?

    thanks - barry
