Working on my first build, since my current PC is well and truly past it - Current specs are :
Intel Pentium 4 3.40GHz (Single core, hyper-threaded)
3GB DDR2 Memory
RADEON X800 GTO graphics
Samsung SP2504C 250GB HDD
Sony DVD RW AW-G170A & Lite-on DVD SHD-16P1S
Main reason I haven't upgraded for ages is because I'm gonna have to replace the motherboard, and therefore the CPU, Graphics card, Memory, and possibly disk drives? (not sure whether they'll work with newer stuff). And because I don't really know what I'm doing ._.
So here's what I'm thinking so far :
Not to bothered about the cost of a new drive, if I need one. Willing to stretch my budget to around £250, but less is good.
So, what I need help with - Is this a decent system? Is there anything slightly better that I could get for a similar price, or anything that's unrealistic relative to everything else, that I should get a cheaper equivalent of? Any suggestions for RAM? (Really don't know anything about different types of RAM :X ). And is it worth replacing the stock heat sink?
I'm not really looking to overclock (Not knowing what i'm doing with that either '^^) but I still want to be able to upgrade a few more times before having to replace my mobo again.
Thanks, and sorry about being such a newbie '^^
EDIT: Probably should've mentioned >.< Using this as a gaming PC, but i'm not planning on running Crysis at full settings or anything. So long as it runs, not too bothered about super shiny graphics.
ASRock Z77 - £65 ---> get cheap h77 or B75 board
Intel Pentium Dual Core G640 Processor (2.80GHZ, 3MB Cache, Socket 1155) ----> get core i3 3220 instead, ivy bridge. pentium is old sandy bridge
2 x 4GB RAM kit - ? ---> YES ddr3 1600
MSI NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 Graphics Card - 1GB - £82 --> fine
Add 128GB SSD from intel/samsung/ocz vertex
How much of a difference will the i3 / SSD make? Particularly with SSD, not too bothered about boot / load times, just so long as things run smoothly. £70 is hard to justify when I already have a HDD And I was hoping to upgrade to quad core when I have some more money, is it worth getting the i3 if im upgrading it again later anyway?
Also, any recommendations for specific brand of RAM? I'm a bit clueless there... Don't wanna buy some for it to flake out on me
Will have a look at the H77 and B75
