Hi

This is just a scenario for some school work for my daughter, but we want it
to be realistic, can anyone tell me:

If we use a 25 port switch, does each pc connect to the switch or do they
daisy chain to each other.

We want to include an interactive white board, where would this connect (a
pc or the switch)

Same with printers, just to one of the pc's or the switch

We need to include a server as a shared drive, would this connect to the
switch (or hub), can anyone tell me where i could get a price, we are on a
budget of £20k for the system but i am having trouble finding a price and
also what would be a suitable spec for this.

thanks

Gary

all pc's, board, server connect to switch(es)
printer connected to one pc (=shared printer), OR to a switch using a
virtual print server
(might even connect the printer to the server and share it there)

all pc's configured for static ip, unless you use a DHCP-server in the form
of a simple router connected by LAN port to the switch too

pricing:
switch about 30euro for DLink DES1008D (need 4) or about 100euro for DLink
DES1024 (need one)
router about 45euro for DLink DI604, or 80euro for a DLink DI704 (built in
printer server)
virtual printer server about 80euro (if not using the DI704 or server as
printer server)
cabling say 50eurocent per meter

in this config you just connect one LAN port of the router to first port of
first switch, one port of first switch to one port of second switch, etc...
OR
first LAN port of router to first port of first switch, second port of
router to first port of second switch, etc....

all pc's connect to any free port
if connecting the WAN port of the router to a ISP-modem it enables you to
have internet on any pc

for some networks it might be simpler to use smaller switches and physically
distribute them, since physical distribution of switches might reduce
cabling somewhat
eg: first switch in first classroom, second switch in second classroom,
......
