Hi, im just about to host a small LAN party at my house (for about 5 people) and was wondering whether a computer with a PII and 256mb RAM would be enough to run a dedicated Counterstrike server for about 5 people? Im not exactly sure of the involved factors but im guessing a high speed memory bus is needed? If this doesnt work I can setup a P3 750.
Also, would a switch provide for much better network performance over a hub in this circumstance (My friend already has a hub, would i need to get a switch to get best lan performance?)

i dont play counter-strike, but im guessing it will be fine. It is console based isnt it? Heck, my friend rand a dedicated deus ex server on a p1-200 system. A hub should be ok, but a switch would definitly be nice, especially for file transfers.

i agree with a switch being a better option...as for running a DED server. it should be a breeze on your old machines config.

I did it with a P2-300 and 320 something MB RAM. Managed to host a CS Server with 20 players on it using Mandrake Linux in Command Line only mode. (also managed a Q3 server with 12 players)

Please do use Linux, its so much more stable and lightweight than the window$ servers....if u absolutely need to run Linux of a CD (i.e. not install it), try using Knoppix. It auto detects your hardware and its simply brilliant

Um... I was planning on running this from Windows. I admit that I dont have a clue abou Linux, and would really prefer to run it from windows (windows is already installed).

that would be pushing it, we have a 18 player server running red hat linux. the machine is a p3 800 with 512 ram and it starts to lag when we hit anything over 16 peeps. a p2 350 can barely run windows let alone a CS server. I would defintely look into the linux option if you want to use that machine. I would prolly guess that you wouldn't want to have it host anything over 10 players.

Don't think I'd say a pII 350 can barely run windows, I've got a dual pII 400 running 2000 wonderfully

It's all good ^_^

yeah i run a PIII 500Mhz with 256Mb RAM on WinXP and it runs fast and smooth,

obviously not as nice as my gaming machine :)

use a hub, even a 10Mbit hub will be fine for gaming, the bandwidth required is minimal for a home LAN for gaming....

I personally use a 100Mbit switch, but the only benefit that gives me is file transfers locally, for gaming 10Mbit is still a HUGE excess.

Right everyone, Ive already had the party, although in the end we didnt run a dedicated server - I set a non-ded one up on my AXP 2000+ which was fine. We had a few problems with the computers not being able to see each other, and in the end we were only able to play CS mods. I think this was due to my switch being a bit over-complex (it has DHCS (sp?) and packet inspection and VPM tunneling??) for the Job. Next time my mate is bringing his 10mbit hub - should work better :-)

i don't think the switch was "too complex" it was just that the PC's weren't configured right...my 100Mbit switch has always worked fine for LAN's with some PC's using W98 some W-XP, Mac OSX etc...

One thing i only realised yesterday was that someone was using a crossover cable, would this have caused those problems?

First off CS is gay. It is an old game with crappy graphics and poor game play. Secondly, an asian man with an abacus could run a dedicated server of it because it is so crappy. Third get some real games.

If its not broken, you're not trying hard enough.

Haha, an asian man with an abacus, that's funny

You into Battlefield 1942 Mr.14dx? because system resource wise, I think that could be the total opposite of cs

It's all good ^_^

Isnt 1942 just a mod on the HL engine? i cant see it being much more intensive, but at least it doesnt suck.

If its not broken, you're not trying hard enough.

I'm entitled to my own opinion and just because you dont agree with it, doesn't mean I haven't gone through puberty (im 22). Maybe I didn't choose the most intelligent way to voice my opinion, but you dont have to make rude, stupid comments towards me.

If its not broken, you're not trying hard enough.

Reply to 14Dx

Not the most intelligent way to voice your opinion? You come in here saying the game is gay and to get some real games, and that

Forgive me, but the stupid rude comments didn't originate with my post. Don't suddenly act defensive when such personal attacks began from you. You attacked the game and those who still enjoy playing it without prevocation and, to prevent coming across ludicrously ignorant as some people here do, I make a small remark commenting on the tasteless post you made. Then you come back insulting my mom. Brilliant. I could not have thought of a better comeback.

Please, anything you can henceforth say would most likely be off-color and in bad taste, leaving you no further ahead than you already are.

Have you noticed that your the only one who got upset with my post's? Do you know what a joke is?

If its not broken, you're not trying hard enough.

Reply to 14Dx

I've read very few of your posts before. I can appreciate a joke, but the limitations of the internet are that it is impersonal. Such things as sarcasm and innuendo cannot be expressed, and tempers can flare easily because of misunderstandings, such as here.

I can appreciate a joke. Can we call it a truce? I'm already fighting with one other moron over the same thing. He couldn't understand I was offering advice, and needlessly insulted me, and now just refuses to stop. He keeps growing more and more stubborn and incomprehensible. I wish I could meet him so I could find out what the f*ck his problem is.
