Hi,
I've posted here in the past about the Pioneer CLD 1010. The only North
American consumer player with the red laser.
This is a single-sided older model without an S-Video output.
As an experiment, I hooked this player up to my progressive scan
Panasonic dvd recorder, which is connected to my tv set via its S-Video
output
Viewing a laserdisc this way, via the Panasonic recorder, afforded an
excellent laserdisc picture. The good quality comb filter in the
recorder eliminated much of the NTSC artifacts and really let the
players crisp, sharp, low noise images shine!
This player DOES NOT have the dreaded smear issue!
I compared it with a smearing player. At the 5:55 mark of Star
Wars(Special Edition Box Set), you could see princess Leah's hand smear
when she inserts the disc into R2D2.
On the 1010 the image has zero smearing and a nice sharp, crisp,
colorful picture!
It's a top-flight laserdisc image, when utilizing a good quality comb
filter!

It may be more accurate to say that the CLD-1010 is the only North American
consumer player to use a red laser diode.

Older players that used HeNe gas tube lasers also lit red when working. -

Yes, sorry, I forgot to include the word diode.
I also should have mentioned the monitor in use- a 1994 27 inch Proscan
tv set.
