Many possibilities. Does this happen when booting up or when in windows? If when booting then the first thing to do would be to boot up in safe mode, (keep pressing f8 on boot until options come up). If it boots up all the way then its probably a driver issue. If not then a reinstall could possible solve the problem. If that doesn't work then its more than likely going to be hardware - memory, cpu etc.

It happens in windows, I've tried a fresh install of windows 7 but it kept happening. I've swapped hard drives so I don't think it's that, I was thinking maybe it's the RAM

I would ask if there was any software to test the memory but it seems to happen more when I try to install anything, not sure if that gives you an idea of what it could be?

I would just swap out the memory with known good ram and see what happens. Or if there are two stick in the board try them one at a time.
