Crossfire/SLI or Single GPU

Going to build my first gaming comp, wondering if i should get a single, powerful GPU or could i save more/faster games with two lower cards in Crossfire/SLI?

If so, what cards.

$400 NZD budget, look on trademe.co.nz if you want as i might buy cards off there as they are much cheaper, albeit used...
