Just like the I said in the title.
Norton System Works 2004 sucks.
I was using Norton System Works 2002. Never had a problem with it. It was the only antivirus and utility software I have ever used that never caused me any hassle.
It was recommended to upgrade to the 2004 version. It sucks. I installed it a couple of days ago and it just sucks. The Live Update doesn't work. The Antivirus gives me an internal error. It loads so damn slow a constrictor snake could have eaten a rat.
Totally disapointed. Useless program IMO.

Man, it took you a long time to realize this. I stopped using NSW years ago. It slows the machine down to a crawl and it causes more problems than it fixes.

Just use NAV and a firewall. That covers most issues. I use NIS and it's ok. Not great, has issues too, but it's ok.

I don't have all the utility crap on auto. Just the Antivirus and Live Update.
I use all the other features manually.
I know the utility features are a major resource hog.
The problem I was having was with live update. It wouldn't install the latest virus definitions and it was also listing an internal error with the Antivirus when I tried to manually access the user settings.
I uninstalled Live Update and reinstalled the latest version a few minutes ago and it seems to have fixed the problems.
The only other thing that annoys me is opening the System Works interface from the start menu takes a lot longer to load as compared to the 2002 version.
I'm still not impressed.
I was going to update to 2004 on my notebook but I changed my mind because of the experience with installing and using it on my desktop system. I'm just going to renew my Antivirus definition update license on my notebook when it expires.
I wish I did that with my desktop system.
I don't recommend using Norton System Works 2004. It's not worth the upgrade.

All versions of Norton System Works are useless.

Only NAV is good. And I never use LiveUpdate. I manually download and update definations, so never had problem with LiveUpdate.

I have never had a problem with Norton Antivirus until the 2004 version bundled with System Works 2004.
I have always had good luck using Systems works 2000 and 2002.
I know some people have problems with Norton. But I was alway lucky and never experienced any problems.

Well I got the Norton Anti-Virus 2004 Pro, and it sucks, spyware scanning, adware scanning, and added a protected recycle bin, an unerase wizard, and a wipe info tool, I don't know why the crap they added that resource sucking junk, to a perfectly good AV program, its like some of the System works is now piggy backing on the AV program, does anyone know if thats a characteristic of the pro version, does the regular NAV2004 have that added crap?

NAV2004 is just the stand alone program.
It seems to be working fine now. Although Norton hasn't issued any new updates. Next issue is tomorrow.
I think the problem I had was caused by not removing Live Update before installing System Works 2004.
I had uninstalled the main program for System Works 2002 and it's associated folders. But I didn't notice Live Update is a seperate installation from the main program.
I uninstalled Live Update and installed the latest version from the Norton web site. So far so good. I hope that fixed my problem!
The programs I use in System Works are:
Norton AntiVirus in auto protect mode, auto scan weekly
Norton WinDoctor in manual,
Speed Disk in manual,
Fast and Safe CleanUp in manual,
One Button Check Up, auto scan weekly,
Live Update in auto.

I just started using Norton GoBack. I wanted to see if it works any better than Windows System Restore. So far I have noticed is that it uses more disk space but it makes more frequent restore points.
I don't know what Password Manager is supposed to do.
The other programs in System Works I don't have a use for.

It looks like the AntiVirus Pro version includes the data recovery options included with the programs in System Works.
The standard version of NAV is just the plain old AV program from the past. It just has an updated search engine that includes scanning for spyware and adware.

I've heard that NAV2004 has f**king product activation. How bad it is?

Reply to Spitfire_x86

Yes it does have product activation.
What's worse it only allows you to use and activate it on one computer.
Even Microshaft lets you install Office on your desktop and a portable (notebook).

That's why I wouldn't touch it, myself. I don't run anti virus. I don't need it with all the other things that are out there. If Norton wants to run my puter, they can buy it for me & set it in my house! Other than that, it's my machine, I paid for it, I built it & I'm going to run it as I see fit.

Does NAV 2004 have significant feature/performance advantage over NAV 2002?

I wouldn't be the one to tell you that. The only thing I use that's Norton, is the Speed Disc for defraging. I've learned to pare it down to just that, that's all I have installed. I'm running NAV & Utilities combined 2003 to get the Speed Disc.
