Is the HD 7870 decent for 3D modelling?

What I have:

Intel Core i5-3570K Processor
MSI Z77A-G41 Motherboard
700W Power Supply
Kingston HyperX Blu 16GB 1600MHz 240-pin DDR3 (2 8GB chips)

I would like to add a graphics card that will be good for both modelling and gaming. The modelling is just a hobby at the moment with the potential of becoming something more serious in the future. I definitely want something that is capable of performing well in the modelling environment, specifically with 3D Studio Max. I'd like to not spend more than $250 and have found many 7870's that fall into that range and seem to benchmark well. I guess the confusion for me is that the benchmarks are all about gaming and have nothing to do with modelling/rendering. I intend to overclock the CPU for certain and the GPU as well, if this is the model that I purchase. Is this a decent card for the task, or should I be looking at something else? The specific 7870 that I prefer is the PowerColor PCS+ AX7870 Vortex II edition.

  1. HD 7870 is the best you can get at that price. It will be very good for both gaming and 3D modelling. 3DS Max will work wonderfully with it ;).
  2. Thanks. I've read in some older threads that NVidia cards are better for modelling because some of the software is designed to work with them, specifically. Is that still true, and is that true of 3DS Max? Is there anything that I could do dramatically better with a GTX 580 over a 7870? If it's substantially better then I would probably pay the extra $60, or so.
  3. I have absolutely no idea about that. You should ask those questions 3DS Max tech support. As the software is pretty expensive, I'm sure they will be glad to help.

One thing I can advice: if you want to go for Nvidia, go for GTX 660, as it performs just 5% slower than HD 7870, and it also fits your budget.
