EVGA GTX 580 vs Sapphire HD 7850

Hi Good People of Tom's hardware,

I was able to find a good trading deal on this one. I currently have the Sapphire HD 7850 2Gb graphics card and it works great. Im using it in conjunction with an Intel core i5 3570K. Now I came across a fellow enthusiast who happens to be selling or trading his EVGA GTX 580 1.5 Gb...

Now I am asking for your honest opinion on this, is it worth trading for? Mainly I use the PC for high end gaming and 3d rendering.

Pointing out pros and cons would definitely help me decide.

Go ahead and trade, GTX 580 is wayyyyyyyyy better than HD 7850, are you sure it's fair trade?

The GTX 580 is slightly faster but it also uses more power and only has 1.5 gb of vram, which won't be an issue in most games but will in a few.

The 580 outperforms the 7850 but runs hotter and uses more power. The only real detriment is that the 580 can only output to 2 monitors at once while the 7850 can do three (or some versions can do more than three). Other than that the 580 wins.

Well i would kepp that 7850 (only if you do compute apps) and add another one maybe

I am planning to run multi-monitor set-up though, I believe the 2 gb on 7850 will be helpful. Im also using NXZT Hale82 750Watts, will this be enough?

Yup it is fair. I know the guy Im trading with so rest assured it's still in good shape with slight oc, I would have to add cash of course; but it's not that much.

So running 2 7850's will be better than a single 580 card?

2 HD 7850 = HD 7970

If you are only comparing the two then 2 x 7850s in CF on a multi-monitor setup would be much better than a 580. The 580 won't support more than two displays at once anyway. So if you're going multi-monitor at least stick with the 7850. If you are serious about it, you should consider selling the 7850 and going with a 7970 3gb and adding another when you can afford it. The 7970 is better suited overall for multi-monitor setups. But to get back to your comparison - 2 x 7850s is much better than one GTX 580.

Yes . Im still with my first post. Keep that 7850 or maybe sell it and get 7970.
