So finally i can afford a Nvidia GTX 680 and went to microcenter and the radeon 7970 was 100 bucks under so i didn't purchase and came back thinking about getting the radeon 7970 and a small ssd for the OS

I'll be playing on a 720p tv

My motherboard is a Asus Sabertooth z77, Intel Core i5 2500k, 8GB Corsair dominator platinum 1600MHz, Stock Cooler,Nvidia GT 520 installed

I'll be playing skyrim, far cry 3, hitman absolution, all of the other games are on my xbox 360 so i'll be looking at the newest releases for PC

Any suggestions Thanks

For a monitor/tv maximum resolution 720p that is a massive overkill, either a 660 gtx or 7870 will be enough to deliver 60 fps on any game at ultra settings.
Even far cry 3, crysis 3 (when available), etc...

7970 + a 20+ inch 1080p monitor IMO.

I disagree that 7970 is way better. The advantages it has is in price. Performance is more or less a wash. And it took driver optimizations on AMD's part to get to that point. Months after it was released.

I have 2 reference 680s, they are quiet, use less power than the 7970's and nvidia is always on top of their game when it comes to driver support for newly released games.

That said, the 7970 is a better value for sure. Both cards will be overkill on your 720p TV.

Enjoy!

I said 7970+ SSD not only 7970.

So no need add that comment.

And consider getting a monitor like derza said

at 720p neither of those GPUs will benifit you. Those GPUs are meant for 1440p gaming.

Try to aim a Little lower on the GPU or try to get a better TV or monitor.

GTX 660, Radeon 7850 and Radeon 7870 is even overkill on that resolution, but they are the, "sweetspots". So I'd also suggest one of those.

Have you considered the GTX670? You won't be able to tell any difference between that an the GTX680/HD7970 (there really is no major difference) but it's a fair bit cheaper.

EDIT: lostgamer_03 is absolutely right about the best price/performance options, GTX670 will just give you a bit more future proofing before you need to upgrade again.
