Some games were written for DirectX 9. So they'll need Direct X 9. Windows
XP shipped with version 8.0 which would be of no use for these new games.

If you go to Start
> Run
-> Type dxdiag and press OK

This will launch the DirectX Diagnostic Tool so we can check out what's
going on. On the first page they'll be a list of things like on this ->
http://windows.dasmirnov.net/cimages/dxdiag1.jpg at the bottom is your
version of DirectX. If it's 8 they'll you'll need to go to Windows Update
(www.windowsupdate.com) and download the new version (while you'll there
you'll want to grab any critical updates too).

It may also be located somewhere on your game's CD, typically on the first
disc in the DirectX folder.
