Is the new AMD 8350 better for gaming than a Phenom ii x4 955?

The 4170 is terrible, and first generation Bulldozer(X1XX) should not be purchased if your goal is gaming.

6300 is actually decent. I stick with intel myself, but from what I've seen, the 6300 lies between an i3 and an i5.

With both fully overclocked, the 8350 is likely only marginally better in poorly threaded games (most games, except the very newest). But it is going to be much more future proof - as mentioned in the latest "best CPU for gaming" games are getting more multithreaded, so for say, Battlefield 4, Elder Scrolls VII, etc, etc you are probably going to be much better off with the 8350.

Among AMD processors, yes, those are the two good ones. Also, I believe that the 8320 is a better buy than the 8350, seeing as you can OC it to 8350 levels while saving a few bucks.
