Mixing ATA 100 and 66

Simple question, I think. I have a new WD ATA 100 drive on a new XP system, and would like to use an "old" IBM ATA 66 drive as a backup. If I put the two drives on the same IDE channel, will the performance of the newer drive be affected when the other drive is idle?

NO...it will only be affected when copying from one drive to the other.

The ide controllers have independent device timing, so it's able to run each drive at it's designated speed. The IDE controllers can only access one device at a time. So it will send a command and once it's resolved it can send another, from my understanding.
