Feel like making a cheap computer to tinker around with so I went on trademe and browsed around looking for some cheap components and found an i3 http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/cpus/intel/auction-552257131.htm for $130+$10 for heatsink and a Phenom II X4 965 http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/cpus/amd/auction-554179542.htm for $157.

Now i know that the i3 needs a socket 1155 so i found this $65 H61 mobo http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/motherboards/asus/auction-553416526.htm.

Im not too sure what mobo for the Phenom cause i want to overclock it. Look here to find it please - http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/motherboards

Both processors only support up to 1333MHz ram (i think?) so i chose this 2x2GB 1333Mhz for only $30 - http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/memory-ram/1-gb-or-more/auction-553490095.htm

For the HDD, a cheap 160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM will do the trick, coming in at a measly $25 - http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/hard-drives/sata/auction-553905888.htm

For the case, i chose a cheap Aywun one for $40, it will be cheap to ship for only $8 - http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/cases-power-supplies/cases/auction-554002708.htm

For the psu, i found a fsp 400w for $1 reserve (probably will go for more, say $30) - http://www.trademe.co.nz/computers/components/cases-power-supplies/power-supplies/auction-554095693.htm

That means w/o the cpu and mobo it will cost $125. This will keep me under budget but can anyone find me a mobo for the phenom so then i can choose between the two? Thanks :)

What are you using the computer for? For general use, I would get the core i3 because it comes with good integrated graphics. For gaming, you could get the Phenom but then you would need to get a video card because it does not have integrated graphics.

WOW THE price for the amd cpu is high go with the I3 and you should be happy if you was trying a dirt cheap build with a amd cpu I would say a apu cpu at newegg better gpu then intel at this point. as for your hard drive price I have seen 500 gig drives for 49 bucks on sale check around dont settle for a 160.

The i3 has to be the budget choice because if you use the phenom you need a graphics card too , while the i3 has inbuilt graphics that will get you running .

A motherboard with an H61 chip set is ideal

I would tend to only buy new hard drives . They dont age well and its impossible to tell how much life it has left
