Aliens Vs Predator Gold Ed. - Very slow

I just bought the above game on budget, installed ok & starts up but
runs soooo slooooowly that it is un-playable. Have done a search as best
I can but most of the info I can find relates to AvP2. The only snippet
of info I could find mentioned something about problems with XP & to
download an amended dll file from one of the various fan sites,
obviously this is an old game & those sites no longer exist & as the
name of dll file wasn't mentioned I can't do a search on just that name.
Is there anyone out there who can point me in the right direction as I
spent good money on this game & want to get my £1.50's worth out of it
