Hi!

Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong section.

I'm building a computer for gaming (not the hardcore kind of gaming) and whenever I can, I buy secondhand parts.

So far I bought:

- 8Gb Kingston HyperX DDR3 1600Mhz (2x4Gb) CL9 (KHX1600C9D3B1K2/8GX)
- SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 5850 Extreme - 1 GB GDDR5 - PCI_E.2.1
- Chieftec GPS-550 AB A - PSU (checked the +12V amperage for the vga according to a forum somewhere)

I will buy a case with 12 cm fan slots and some cpu cooler such as CM Hyper 212 (that price-range).

What I have problem is that I can't decide which CPU-Mobo I should buy.

There are 3 potential "sets":

- 1st gen i7-860 with an Asus P7P55D Deluxe mobo (no SATA3, no USB3)
- 2nd gen (Sandy B) i3-2100 with a mobo that may or may not support SATA3 and USB3 (latter is more likely)
and my personal preference:
- AMD FX-6300 with an ASROCK 970 Pro3 mobo (USB3 and SATA3)

Pros and Cons:

i7 pros:
- 4 cores, 8 threads (nice multi-threading)
- possible OC-ing
i7 cons:
- it is like 3 years old
- very very old socket type which is even hard to find

i3 pros:
- relatively new
- most games use only two cores
i3 cons:
- no OC
- CPU heavy games could make it sweat

FX-6300 pros:
- new
- AFAIK the next two AMD generations will still use AM3+
- very good OC potential (AFAIK again)
FX-6300 cons:
- AMD(?) - I don't want to start flaming, etc. I like both AMD and Intel, they both have their good and bad things.

So, that seems to be all. The price is very important to me (as buying secondhand things suggested already).
The 1st gen i7 with that out-dated mobo costs exactly as much as a new FX-6300 with the new mobo (no secondhand, straight from the shop).
I can only tell local prices: i7 and the 6300 costs (cpu+mobo) 55000 HUF. The i3 costs 35 - 40000 HUF.

The main question is that considering the pros and cons and the price (and that I'd OC as much as I can), which of these would be the best and why?

On a side note: the most important game is Skyrim (which is CPU heavy as I heard).

Thanks in advance for even reading this. :)

I would get the new FX or the i3 if you wanna save cash.

Well, the question is, is it worth the money or not. :/

I can't find any OC'd fx-6300 benchmarks with games.

I think the FX-6300 will be the best choice as you want to overclock and you cannot overclock the i3. The i7 is outdated.

As demonstrated- http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/gaming-cpu-review-o... - the i7 and i3 are both below the 6300 in the charts, so i would go with the 6300, plus it has overclocking potential.

FX-6300 is the best and more futureproof than i3-3220
