No monitor display

Just hooked up Dell 1707FP monitor in place of original monitor that came with my HP Compaq 7500 system. The Dell monitor has several input choices but I used the VGA source since that's all my PC offers.
I got a brief flash of what should be displayed and then screen went black.
Tried self-test. I got the test pattern for about one second then screen went black.
Re-hooked up to original monitor and all worked as usual.
Any suggestions why Dell monitor cannot display the VGA signal. ?
