Are these the RAM chips? (pic)

Hi

I have a 2gb Palit GTX 460 and i'm currently addicted to cooling 😉

I'm buying some passive mosfet coolers and figured I might as well sort out my graphics card ram chips as well.

My confusion is...my G-card seems to have ram chips on both sides (becaujse it's 2Gb). Can anyone confirm that these are the ram chips before I go and spend a load of cash. I know it seems like a real simple question, but I've taken any notice of ram sinks until now.

yup, it is the memory chip for the card...

if it was elpida/hynix/samsung then it was double sure..........

edit: just cheked some pic from the net, it was samsung memory chip used...

That's unusual to have memory on the backside of a GPU these days with no cooling plate at all, (reminds me of my old ATI 9800 Pro), but regarding every other picture I found on the net none of them come with memory cooling at all on the card backside.

That is definitely memory chips on the backside, if Palit (the card manufacturer) saw no need to cool them, why do you feel you need to?

They've probably locked the memory so it cannot be overclocked to guarantee it running cooler, IDK?

I'm curious was the front side stock cooler you removed covering the memory modules on the front of the card?

If you can OC the memory, I don't suggest you do, without adding the Ram Sinks, and supplying airflow over them.

Yeah you can OC how you like with it - no lock

The stock cooler was a nasty little pointless POS - Palit did a bad job there - hence for £10 it seems worth doing as they dont seem to worry much about cooling in the first place

I used Ram Sinks on my ATI 9800 Pro it had memory modules on the backside of the card as yours does, they did give me some overclocking leeway I would not have had without them.

I used Artic Silver Thermal Adhesive to apply them and applied the adhesive as instructions required which makes them very effective but also un-removeable and an instant warranty void.

However the card ran very cool and lasted approximately 5 years past it's purchase date, so it was way past the warranty anyway.

Thermal adhesive pads you can cut to size would be your best Ram Sink mounting.

That's no worse than having a $1,000.00 valued Toyota with $10,000.00 of stereo equipment inside, with so much bass thump with the windows rolled up the doors open and close by themselves.

It's what he chooses to do with his money man, simple as that.
