I currently discovered that I can play PC games using an xbox 360 controller! Yes I am a little behind but oh well. I plan on upgrading my current htpc so that I can play some of my favorite pc games from the couch. I have never built a true gaming system so I am not sure of the specs required, the games I would be playing are the older total war games and civilization games and skyrim and other elder scrolls. If I made these two upgrades to my current system would I be able to play those games at a decent to great quality level?

The card is Nvidia, I am not sure if that makes a difference is my board and cpu are amd? Should I instead look for a amd/ati card?
The reason for these particular upgrades are that it would allow me to keep my current mobo which I could also eventually upgrade to 8gb of ram for cheap.
