System low on resources

I just bought a laptop (HP Pavilion dual core 4GB RAM) and set up 3 user accounts on it. Within the first few days I received a message upon login that the system was low on resources and I had to log into an account that was already in use. The problem is that all of the accounts are logged out. The problem is getting progressively worse and I have to reboot the computer virtually every time I log in. I've performed virus scans and have been observing the processes over time via the resource monitor. No luck! Any advice? Thanks in advance.
