Normally you just have to change your screen settings to only show picture on the prefered screen, if you just plug a monitor into your laptop it selects the option to clone the picture and show it on both.
Right-click on your desktop, select Screen Resolution, change it from "Show on both displays (or something) to "Show only on 1 (or2, what ever number your monitor got).
