I bought a Palm Tungsten T3 last fall when they came out to replace a
dying Palm IIIx. At the time I installed Palm Desktop 4.1 on my
wife's Powerbook running Mac OSX 10.2.x (Jaguar) (because I didn't
think I'd get pilot-link working with the USB ports on my SunBlade100
desktop machine) and everything was fine.

Recently my wife got me a new G4 iBook running Mac OSX 10.3.x
(Panther) for my birthday. (I'm pretty sure she wanted me to stop
hogging her Powerbook.) When I try to use Palm Desktop Installer it
unexpectedly quits after installing the files. (I've submitted the
error report to Apple.) I can run Palm Desktop, but when I try to use
HotSync Manager I get a shared library error. Palmone's Support
Knowledge Library says this happens after performing a certain type of
Mac OS upgrade and recommends reinstalling Palm Desktop.

This machine has only ever run Mac OSX 10.3.x, and I have not
reinstalled the OS or performed an upgrade on it (other than the
software updates which do not use the option Palm warns about). No
matter how many times I try to reinstall Palm Desktop I still get the
same errors.

Eventually my wife is going to upgrade her Powerbook to Panther and
I'm going to be left with no way to backup my T3.

Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone have a fix?

Has anyone sucessfully gotten pilot-link to work with the USB ports on
a SunBlade100 running Solaris 8 (SPARC)?

Have you tried the PalmOne's Permission Fixer:

(I already had Palm Destkop 4.1 installed when I upgraded to 10.3 from
10.2.8 and so haven't had the above problem.)

If that doesn't help, try the following. Run the installer as 'root'.
You can do that by logging in as root (after you have enabled the root
user), but it's a lot easier if you get a utility like "Pseudo", which
allows you to run other programs as root, even if you are not logged in
as root.

Neither the Permission Fixer nor running the Palm Desktop Installer
through sudo helped.

Sorry the above didn't help. What is the text of the error you see?

I just reinstalled Palm Desktop today (downloaded latest copy from Palm)
and everything worked great. I also reinstalled iSync 1.3 and the Palm
1.2 conduit.

Long ago I did have a similar problem to the one you describe, and that
ended up being because I had partitioned my hard drive and mounted the
partition as /Users. It seems that a lot of apps don't like partitioned
drives.
