Reccomended Graphics Card

Hi,

I am currently working on a computer build list for a desktop computer I plan to build this Christmas. Currently, I have just about every component set in the list except for the graphics card. Here's what I plan to be using it for:
World of Warcraft on Ultra settings
Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (I'd like it to be 25-30+ FPS at Ultra)

At the moment, I'm only playing WoW, but, I want the graphics card to last a while as I expand my PC Gaming.

My budget for a graphics card is somewhere between $170 - $220. I've narrowed it down to an NVIDIA GTX 600 series, but I really have no idea which brand (Gigabyte, PNY, etc), or version I want. At the moment, I've found the PNY GTX 660 2GB, but I don't really know for sure.

In case you need this information to continue, my current list of other important components is:
Motherboard: ASRock P69
PSU: Corsair CX600

If you need any other components, just let me know; I have most of them.

I know that it's very possible to find a really great video card within my price range, but as I said, I really just cannot choose between all the choices. I don't really have the technical knowledge for specs like Clock Rate and such to sway my decisions.

Thank you very much!

  1. I would look at the AMD 7870, instead of the 660. The 78xx's are really the best performance/price ratio out there at this time. The 7870 will be right between the 660 and the 660Ti in performance, and will cost about the same, or a bit less even than the 660.

Note that blizzard games do better on Nvidia cards, but WoW isn't very demanding and my 7770 will max it very well.

  2. Could you specify an exact product for the AMD 7870? Like I said, I really hate having to pick a single card out of a list of 20+ on Newegg.

Also, would the AMD be compatible with my Mobo? It's an "intel" mobo because my CPU is an i5.

Note to others: I'm still open to other inputs for other cards if you have one that would suit me.

    Get this one : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121660

The 7870 series have problems like freezes, black screens problems, and for skyrim nvidia are the better ones.
Also the 660 gtx is one the level with 7870, not with the 7850(it's inferior).
And has better drivers, more percentile fps, exlusive features.

  4. Your best bet is a 660 a decent 7870 cost more then your budget.I would recommend Asus or MSI 660 though not PNY.
  5. Okay - thanks for the help thus far.
I've narrowed it down to the GTX 660, since it sounds like that will run better with the games I've chosen.
    I can't afford the MSI 660, but how's EVGA?
Now, I like the looks of the Asus, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121660

But I just realized something. It says PCI Express 3.0 x16... My Mobo says "PCI Express 2.0 x16".
I'm guessing that's not good. Does that mean Mobo upgrade?
  6. It should work. The EVGA has best customer service but the cooling sucks compared to MSI and Asus.
  7. How about this model you also get a free Assassin’s Creed III w/ purchase

You can still use the same motherboard and upgrade in the future.
  8. Update: I've changed Mobo's to an MSI with a PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot:

Also, I think I like the looks of the ASUS GTX 660.

Since you say that the EVGA has lesser cooling, and it's $5, I figure I'll just use the ASUS.

But please do tell me; would those cards work with my old Asrock mobo since it only said it had a PCI Express 2.0?
  9. Any pcie 3.0 card is compatible with pcie 2.0/1.1/1.0 slots.
The asus is the one to have right now, it has a rebate in which the price stays at 194.99$.
It's the best 660 gtx card in par with the 660 gtx MSI TF.

    + 1 i second this. ;)
  11. Hmm - I did not know that at all. Thank you for enlightening me.

As for now, I just hope the rebate sticks around until the 26th :P. Fingers crossed!

Thank you for all the help - I think I'm quite settled on a new card :)
