Seems like many of these people are using lens/camera image fidelity
to justify their conclusions and lets face it, Nikon seems to have it
over Canon in this regard. After all, why do sports photogs (the ones
Canon always showcases in their ads in magazines) need the sharpest
lenses? They don't.
Now, if it's a macro lens, then they really have no choice but to make
it a good one because macro lenses rely on sharpness nearly to the
exclusion of all else. But with some long teles, WAs, speed seems to
trump image quality for Canon, as strange as that may seem.
Canon has the ability and the glass (Optron co.) to make some very
impressive lenses in terms of optical quality.

I don't really understand (or agree with) the header for your post. You
have posted links from the D70 forum which praise the D70 but don't include
those that call the D70 a POS, say that "this is my last Nikon ... I'm
switching to Canon ..etc.. Go read the Canon forum and you will find an
equal amount of users who are satisfied Canon users and (for those with
problems) think Canon is a POS. I have seen awesome photos from both
Canons, Nikons and recently an unbelievable one from a non DSLR Fuji (I
forget the model number.)
Describing the satisfied D70 users as "rabid bastards" is a little too
strong a comment. Do you agree?

Does it really matter to anyone? All my digital equipment and lenses are
Nikon and I'm extremely pleased with all of it. If someone out there in
Internet land doesn't like me using Nikon then they can buy me all
equivalents in Canon gear. I'll happily use both Nikon and Canon at the
same time without a single complaint other than complaining about carrying
all that gear around. Bottom line, buy it and enjoy it and stop worrying
about what others have to say about it.

OI! Leave us Nikonians alone!
I've been a Nikon user for the past 30 years, so i would'nt change in any
case as I have so many fine Nikon lenses and accessories, but i will admit
it was the 1/500th second flash sync speed that did it for me with the Nikon
D70, it makes flash fill in photography so easy even in bright sunlight.
I also find the fast sync is particularly good in natural history
photography, using a good telephoto zoom with a telephoto compatible flash
head allows for pin sharp wild life shots!
Prior to the D70 and D70s I was mainly using Fuji Finepix S2 Pro bodies,
they are rebadged Nikons after all, but the D70 and the D50 for that matter
represent such astounding value for money considering the features they
provide the photographer with. If anyone here has used Finepix Pro bodies,
you may well agree with me that the camera bodies are bulky and heavy, flash
sync is too low and focussing distinctly sluggish, that seems to be where
the new Nikon consumer digital SLRs are particularly strong - fast, accurate
and lightweight. (Though I do have a soft spot for Fuji Finepix colour
rendition - lovely)
There has been comment about the advantages that 8MP configured cameras can
give compared to the Nikon's 6MP, but I have used several 8MP SLR and ZLR
designs, and I find, personally, so far that the images produced may have a
higher pixel count, but they tend to be flatter looking and 'plasticky'
somehow, and I have to do a whole lot more work on them in Photoshop than I
do on either the Fuji 6MP or Nikon 6MP digital images. Of course this matter
will improve over time as more efficient 8MP (and greater) sensors are
produced.
I have nothing against Canon, Konica, Pentax digital cameras etc etc, but
for me Nikon has consistently provided me with the tools that I can use to
realise my photographic imagination and visualisiations. I am sure Canon,
Olympus, Pentax, Konica and other Digital SLR/ZLR users feel the same about
their equipment too. What is most important is to use the darn cameras you
have to take pictures - i mean real pictures, not test charts and lens
tests, that is not what photography is about!
