I'd like to upgrade the GPU on my Dell Studio XPS 435T desktop. Current specs:

Intel Core i7-950 processor (8MB L3 Cache3.06GHz)
9GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1066MHz
1024MB ATI Radeon HD 4870 GDDR5
475 watt PSU

Looking to play latest games at max settings on 1920 x 1080, 24" monitor with high FPS. I'd like to get another 2-3 years out of the computer before I purchase a new one. I'm looking into picking up a 27" or 30" monitor in the future so would like to be able to run display at 2560 x 1440 with good FPS. Budget ~$500 give or take.

Is it worth upgrading the GPU without also upgrading the PSU or can I get a nice card that will perform without any other upgrades? Which NVidia or Radeon GPUs should I be looking at?

Thanks in advance.
