Your question

Are my temps high?

Hello,

In mid-December I built my first computer! It has a i7-3930k on a asus rampage iv extreme. It will run idle at around 30 degrees, maybe into the 40s when playing games for a bit. But then I got the idea of overclocking the CPU, well because the motherboard is "Built for extreme overclocking". I did the new overclock thing in the motherboard were you just type in a number and it oc's to that number. For instance 43= 4.3 Ghz 35=3.5Ghz and so on. I read an overclocking guide and they said 43 is pretty stable so I went ahead and did 43. The oc rebooted itself and I went back into the bios, everything was going well then I check the temps 94 digress. Is this normal? What can I do to get it to run cooler?

Thank you

That is pretty hot, do you mean it was that hot when you turned the pc on?

94 degrees is too hot for me.

Things to check/do to make it run less hot:

1. Get a good quality heatsink

2. Check and re-seat the CPU/heatsink

3. Check (and lower if necessary) the CPU voltage.

4. Check fans - add fans if necessary (Ensure good air flow)

4.3 GHz OC is not too high IMO for that CPU.

yes well we would need the full specs to know whats up.

also cleaning off the current thermal paste and reapplying some fresh paste would help.

than reinstalling the cooler.

as ubrales said get a good cooler if u dont currently have one.

also 4.3 is not high at all as an oc.

I dont think he has a good cooler and somehow, the voltages got jumped up way too high

still waiting for his full specs to give him a better answer 0-0

The specs are:
Asus rampage iv extreme
Intel core i7 3930k
32 gb corsair vengence at 1600mhz
Nvidia GeForce gtx 680 4gb sli
Corsair h100i
Corsair ax1200
Nzxt switch 810

When I saw it was at 90 digress I hit the reset switch on the mobo

I think so too. But I'm pretty sure the "somehow" is the automatic voltage increase that comes with higher clock speeds. (If he just bumped the multiplier)

Not trying to be rude, but do you think with an x79 based computer I would cheap out on a CPU cooler?

At idle as I type the CPU voltage is 1.248 and this is on stock settings

The CPU is running at 20 Degress at stock, but it is cold outside and my window is open...

silly question, but some have tried overclocking 6cores with a shitty cooler.

so dont be surprised :p

id recommand, uninstall cooler. take off the thermalpaste with 100% rubbing alcohol.

than reapply a pea size of thermalpaste, than reinstall the h100i.

before doing that reset all ur settings to default in bios.

and manually enter them. try with lower voltage and stock cpu settings.

also maybe dust it out with an aircan could help.

My voltage as I type is between 0.9 and 1.0 on idle - temps 31 degs C. - not overclocked yet - i7 3770K

I will try that tomarrow. But for now I don't fell like taking my computer apart at 10 pm. Do you know of any good overclocking instructions for my Mobo?

Some people with x79 systems use budget coolers like the hyper212, which would give the temps like he suggests with a cool room temperature, and for 40 degree gaming load, he said slight load, which seems normal, but when you overclock, a hyper 212 is designed for a 4.4ghz overclock on the standard 95watt tdp platforms, not the enthusiast ones. And when the voltages get bumped up, it will rocket the temps

The instructions say that the Mobo won't allow a bad overclock because it has a restart button that put everything back to normal and that is the only thing that is keeping me grounded from going crazy. I did the overclock the pc restarted turned off then back up the on board monitor said 73 Degress but nothing popped up on my monitor like press del to enter bios. So in my stress I hit the restart button nothing happend wait a couple seconds went from 73 Degress to 16, how the *** is that possible ? Nothing popped up on the monitor so I cut the computers power off, what a brilliant Idea that was. So I have not turned it back on. So dafuq do I do? Hey It just came up to me that my Mobo has a 5 year warranty so another thing to keep my groundeed

Ok so I'm in bios, it is running at 4 ghz at 23 Degress! Yay we did it. But now here is a,problem that I'm not sure is a problem, it says CPU turbo mode speed is 3.4 ghz but my CPU is at 4 . Will it underclok itself to get to 3.4
