Constant lag even in older games - HD 5770

Hi folks,

I recently upgraded my RAM, CPU and Motherboard, and since have been having issues with games that would run on my older system config just fine. Every component other than the RAM, CPU, and Motherboard is unchanged. The games I'm running are Company of Heroes, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3 - in all of them they run okay, but I get a semi-regular BIG pause in graphics on each of them, it's not smooth at all. My system specs are:

- Asus P8Z77-V-LX
- Intel 3570 CPU
- XFX 1GB HD5770 Graphics
- 8GB DDR3 1600 RAM
- Windows 7 Professional
- 650W Thermaltake Toughpower QFan PSU
- 1 x 3TB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM HDD (system)
- 1 x 1.5TB WD Green SATA HDD (games)


For comparison my old setup, which ran them fine, was:

Ive seen using low RPM HDDs for games cause this issue. Im not sure If that has anything to do with the Green WD drive you have as Ive never used one. Worth a shot installing a game on your system drive and seeing if that makes a difference.

I just updated to Catalyst 12-10 but haven't tried any games since going that.

I'll open up the case a little later and check the connectors. I know that I have:
2 x to the motherboard, the one really large one plus another 8-pin connector.
2 x connectors to my two DVD-RW drives
2 x connectors to my 1.5TB and 3TB drives
1 x connector to the HD 5770

As said though I'll open the case and double check, posting any additional ones.

Okay. And make sure they are all firmly connected. I'd also try disconnecting the DVD drives and checking whether it helps. A dying power supply unit could cause such issues.

Do these slowdowns occur immediately when you start a game, or after you've been playing for a while? If the latter, it could be heat-related throttling. Make sure your temps are good, and that whatever fans you have aren't just blowing randomly, but are set up to create a flow of air through your case.

Onus - depends on what you mean by 'for a while' - they're not immediate, but within 5-10 minutes of starting up.

Check your CPU temps. If your CPU is overheating, it will throttle to cool down.
Make sure there is no page file on your "green" drive. It should be on your system drive, or other fast drive that won't be frequently spinning down to save power.
