Canon 28-105

Just trying to find out if anyone else is experiencing this same problem
with the Canon 28-105 3.5-4.5 lens.

It is on Digital Rebel XT. When full wide (28mm) focus is not sharp. If
I zoom to 40mm auto focus, lock that focus, zoom out to 28mm and take
the picture it is in focus. Also when focusing at 28mm it never seems to
hit the same point twice which further proves it is not focusing
correctly at 28mm. I would like to know if this is a problem with this
lens or something I just have to live with.
