Cd's Detected, DVD's Not.

I recently acquired a Creative Encore DX2 5x dvd rom drive from a friend of mine (the drive itself is a toshiba md1002 or something like that), and popped it into my machine this weekend. I had no trouble installing or updating the software, and the drive is detected just fine. It operates flawlessly, reading and running Cd's, until you put in a DVD disc. At this point, the "busy" light blinks for a while as it tries to find something in the drive, then it gives up without having detected anything. I have tried numerous Dvd's, as well as cleaning the lens. Any clues?

My system:
Athlon XP 1600+ on an Asus A7n266 Mboard. 512M DDR266 Ram. Have one other cd rom on same IDE channel as Dvd Rom; Dvd Rom is master.

i had bought a brand new compaq and it had the same problem the warranty replaced it because the dvd optical reader has reading dvd's it was bad from factory you might want to check on it
