hi again,

i always thought that the best configuration with the IDE ports would be to have the cdrw alone on the second IDE as master. the dvd as slave on the 1st IDE and the hdd as master on the first IDE.
but now i hear that in this configuration the dvd can slow down the hdd ?
so it would be better to have the hdd alone on the 1st ide
and the dvd as slave on the 2nd ide and the cdcrw as master on the 2nd ide ?

i have :

hdd : maxtor 60 gb 7200 rpm
dvd : lite-on
cdrw : plextor (24x10x40x)

rest of the system :
cpu : amd athlon xp 1800+
mobo : asus v7 266
ram : 2x256 mb ddr
os : win98se

you should have hard drine on primary controller master or cs or stand alone, the dvd should be secondary master and cdrw should be secondary slave

Here're my recommendations:

If you do a lot of HDD to CD burning:
Primary: HDD
Secondary: CDRW + DVD

If you do a lot of on-the-fly disc-to-disc burning:
Primary: HDD + DVD
Secondary: CDRW

ok i mainly copy from hdd to cd, rarely onl the fly. so i will put my hdd alone on the primary ide.

the cdrw manual says that the cdrw works best as master on the ide (and no secondary slave). does it make any difference if i make the dvd or the cdrw master or slave on the secondary ide ?

I recommend you put your CDRW as the master, as the master has priority over the slave. That way, you'd have less chances of having burning problems.
